Unlocking Dyslexia provides tailored CPD and teacher training in dyslexia, designed around the individual needs, priorities and challenges of each school. Our practical, evidence-informed training equips teachers and support staff with a deeper understanding of dyslexia and the confidence to identify barriers to learning. We offer guidance on how to implement effective, inclusive strategies in the classroom at both primary and secondary school level.
Whether a school is looking to develop whole-school dyslexia awareness, support specific staff teams, strengthen existing practice or build a more inclusive approach to literacy and learning, Unlocking Dyslexia works collaboratively with each school to create bespoke training that is relevant, practical and sustainable.
Sessions can be delivered as whole school training or in smaller more practical workshops.
Training brings together current research into dyslexia and neurodiversity with practical experience and real-world guidance. We will explore up to date definitions of dyslexia alongside current policy and practice. The aim is to help staff develop a better understanding of dyslexia and what it can look like in the classroom. Training focuses on the following areas outlined below but can be tailored to best fit your school's requirements.
Understanding Dyslexia
Staff will gain a clear understanding of how dyslexia can present and the different ways it can affect a pupil’s reading, writing, spelling. processing speed and wider learning.
Recognising When Pupils May Need Support
The training will help staff feel more confident in recognising possible signs that a pupil may need further assessment or additional support. We will also explore the areas of learning that are most commonly affected and how these difficulties may impact a pupil’s progress and confidence. We will explore the difference between a dyslexia screener and a full professional diagnostic dyslexia report.
Practical Classroom Strategies
Practical, easy-to-use strategies will be shared throughout the sessions, giving staff ideas they can use in everyday classroom teaching as well as targeted interventions. The focus is on approaches that are realistic, effective and easy to put into practice.
Learning Through Multi-sensory activities and games
Sessions may include practical activities and games that support the development of key skills. Taking part in these activities gives staff the opportunity to experience different approaches for themselves and consider how they could be adapted to support pupils.
Ideas, Resources & Further Support
Staff will leave with a range of ideas for interventions and practical resources they can use in school. They will have greater understanding of SpLD friendly teaching and learning to benefit all learners. Recommended books, websites and other useful resources will also be shared to support continued learning and development.
Training can be delivered as whole-school CPD or in smaller groups, depending on the needs and preferences of the school. Whilst whole-school CPD provides an opportunity to develop a shared understanding of dyslexia and promote consistent approaches across the school, smaller, more focused sessions allow for a more hands-on approach, giving staff the opportunity to explore strategies, activities and resources in greater depth and discuss how they can be applied in their own classrooms.
